Dichotic Subliminal Messages

Just continue reading and you're learn all about...

If you’re like me, your first reaction on hearing about dichotic-subliminal messages is to go "Huh?"

The first time I heard about dichoctic-subliminal messages, I had no idea what it was all about.

So, to make sure that we’re all on the same page, I’ll start off by explaining...

What does It Mean?

If you look up the meaning of "dichoctic-listening", you’ll find that it means "presenting a stimulus to one ear that is different in some respect (as in message delivered, pitch, loudness, frequency, or energy) from a stimulus presented to the other ear".

In simple English, it basically means listening to different messages in both ears at the same time, i.e. one message to the right ear, another message to the left ear.

If you’re thinking that it’s difficult enough listening to one message, what more listening to two messages at the same time, one in each ear, you’re right.

It’s very difficult, if not impossible, for most people to listen to two messages at the same time. If you’ve ever had several kids talking to you very loudly at the same time, you’ll know what I mean.

Although your mind can hear both messages, your conscious mind won’t be able to process both messages simultaneously for more than a few seconds. You’ll be able to choose which ear’s information to listen to, but not both at the same time.

I’m sure that you can easily see how dichoctic-listening can be used for subliminal messages. If not, don’t worry, I’ll explain why in a moment.

But before I discuss about dichotic subliminal messages, let’s find out...

Does Dichotic-Listening Work?

Studies have shown that most people are able to consciously focus on only one message at a time.

However, here’s the interesting bit.

The studies also demonstrate that, on a subconscious level, people are able to detect the messages delivered to both your left and right ears at the same time, even when they can’t consciously remember what the messages are all about.

Here’s some interesting experiments done on dichotic listening.

SOME INTERESTING EXPERIMENTS
  • (Cherry, 1953; Broadbent, 1959) - Participants were only able to focus on the messages delivered to one ear. However, they could only recall that there was someone speaking on the other side, but could not remember or understand the message on the other side.
  • (Triesman, 1960) - Participants could also track messages that switched across ears (called "shadowing") without being that the message had shifted from one ear to another.

Left ear  : The cat sat.....but it pours
Right ear : It never rains.....on the mat

  • (Von Rich, 1975) - One of the more interesting experiments involved giving participants an electric shock whenever the word "suitable" appeared. In the 2nd phase of the experiment, participants were told to focus or shadow words in the left ear, whilst another list of words was presented to the right ear.

Interestingly, whenever the word "suitable" appeared in the right ear, the participant's skin would show a reaction and exhibit a Galvanic Skin Response, even when the participant did not consciously hear or was even aware of the word "suitable" at all.

It’s quite obvious from the studies done that dichotic listening does have an effect, even when the participants weren’t consciously aware of the messages.

But what’s more significant is that these experiments proves that the subconscious mind is able to influence us (and even result in a physical reaction in our bodies), even when we’re not consciously aware of it.

Quite obviously, we’re a lot more influenced by our subconscious mind than we realize. This also confirms what many Eastern philosophers and new-age practitioners have been saying for a long time.

Interesting, right?...

What about Dichotic Subliminal Messages?

Now, if you remember, subliminal messages work by bypassing the conscious mind and delivering affirmations or messages directly to the subconscious mind.

Not surprisingly, because dichotic listening is so effective at confusing the conscious mind, it was only a matter of time before someone came up with dichotic subliminal messages.

After all, it’s arguably one of the more effective ways of bypassing the conscious mind and delivering messages directly to your subconscious mind.

At its most basic, dichotic messages simply means playing different affirmations to the left and right ears at the same time. So, what happens is that both hemispheres of your brain gets a different message.

And to really add-value and increase the effectiveness of the dichotic messages, what some dichotic subliminal message products do is to deliver specific messages, specially written for each brain hemisphere.

Now, if you’ve read my article on brain lateralization, you’ll realize that this has significant implications.

Because the two sides of your brain are different, they respond differently to the messages that it hears. This means that you can actually "customize" the messages to each side of your brain to ensure that the messages "get through" effectively and achieve whole-brain stimulation.

For example, the left brain hemisphere is your logical and rational side. It analyses and organizes the information received into logical frameworks. It has the tendency to reason and challenge any information presented directly to it. On the other hand, the right hemisphere is the emotional side and more accepting.

So, a properly-designed dichotic subliminal might have logical, rational explanations for the left hemisphere, whilst the messages going to the right hemisphere would be more abstract and ambiguous. This helps to side-step and avoid any resistance by the conscious mind to the subliminal messages that’s being delivered.

Do Dichotic Subliminals Work?

If you’ve been exploring and reading my articles on subliminal messages, you’re probably aware that people are affected differently by subliminal messages. That’s not surprising as all of us are unique and have different thought patterns, attitudes and thinking habits.

As such, you can't really say that dichotic subliminal message products are better than other subliminal message products. Ultimately, it depends on your own thought patterns and subconscious programming.
