"Goal setting is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible." - Anthony Robbins
Do you remember when the first George Bush was President of the United States and Saddam Hussein had just invaded Kuwait before Operation Desert Storm? Black Hawk Down was actually happening and not just a movie. Boris Yeltsin had just been elected President of Russia.
Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton were the hottest new artists in town and Eric Clapton was getting Grammies for Tears in Heaven and Layla. Then, Michael Jackson was better known for his records (although the last one didn’t do very well).
Arnold Schwarzenegger was a cyborg in Terminator 2 while Tom Hanks was telling the world that "Life is like a box of chocolates" as Forrest Gump. Kevin Costner was playing red indian in Dances with Wolves whilst the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park brought special effects to a whole new level.
That was when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were all the rage and America’s Funniest Home Videos was the only reality show around. Remember when Home Improvement, Frasier and NYPD Blue were the hottest show on TV then?
That was the early 1990s, a little more than 10 years ago.
Think for a moment.
Where were you then? What were you like? What were your hopes and dreams?
What would you have said if someone had asked you, "Where will you be in ten or fifteen years time?"
Are you where you wanted to be back then?
Ten years, an entire decade, passes quickly, doesn’t it?
More importantly, maybe the questions you should be asking yourself are:
- What am I going to be in 10 years from now?
- What are my goals & dreams at the end of the next 10 years?
- Will my goals enable me to create the life of my dreams at the end of the next 10 year?
- How am I going to live today in order to achieve my dreams and goals?
You see, 10 years will pass quickly and you will surely arrive, as surely the sun rises in the east.
However, where you will be 10 years from now is not.
What will you have become and achieved? Will it be as you imagined it to be? Will you have achieved any of your dreams and goals?
My friend, before you know it, the year 2015 will be here, and in a mere 10 years, you’ll be looking back at this very moment, remembering it as you’re remembering the early 1990s just a moment ago.
Will you be delighted and feel a sense of pride and satisfaction, or will you be disturbed and feel a sense of loss and regret?

Your Next 10 Years Depends on the Goals You Set Today
The decisions you make today on your setting goals and how you’re going to achieve your goals and dreams will determine the outcome of your life and how you will feel looking back in 10 years from now.
If you decide not to do anything because setting goals is just too troublesome and you just haven’t got the time, well, haven’t you already made your decision?
No matter what your past is and how the past 10 years turned out, the future doesn’t have to be the same, if you don’t want it to be.
So, if you haven’t already done so, the first thing you should do is to start setting goals.
After all, what do you want to look back on in 10 years time?
"You cannot afford to wait for perfect conditions. Setting goals is often a matter of balancing timing against available resources. Opportunities are easily lost while waiting for perfect conditions." - Gary Ryan Blair

You don’t have to follow the list above. There’s nothing wrong with setting goals as simple as losing some weight to fit into last year’s pair of jeans. Some self-help techniques actually recommend that you start small before going for the really big, ambitious goals.
In fact, sometimes, it may even be better to be setting smaller goals. That’s because it’s much easier setting and achieving smaller goals. More importantly, it gives you the confidence and gets you into the habit of setting and achieving goals.
And don’t discount all these smaller goals. All these little goals add up over the months and years and before you know it, you’ll be surprised to see how much you’ve achieved.
As you get used to setting goals and achieving them, you’ll naturally feel more confident about setting and achieving bigger and more ambitious goals. However, just bear in mind that the larger and more ambitious your goals are, the longer it takes to achieve. But it’s not as if you can’t achieve them. It just takes a little more time.
And, if you need a little help and encouragement getting started in setting goals, you might want to consider self-help techniques such as affirmations and subliminal messages to give you that "little push..."
"To have Goals is to have a future, because without goals we will strive for nothing." - Andrew Ridings
